About the event
This Social Media Investigations course is designed to teach law enforcement
personnel how to legally utilize and exploit social media intelligence in their respective
roles. Students will start out the course by learning the most current case law that
allows them to use these techniques in their investigations, then the students will be
shown how to properly set up undercover accounts on social media platforms. The
course will then cover the most popular social media platforms including Facebook,
Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and Twitter. Students will be taught how to find their
target on each of the platforms, how to connect their target to an account and how to
submit/analyze the legal process from these platforms. During the course students will
be shown relevant and current case studies to reinforce some of the unconventional
investigative techniques taught in the course. Most importantly students will be shown
how to properly document, save and preserve the evidence they find on social media.
Nearly every case law enforcement investigates has a tie to social media, starting from
the first responding officer taking the report to the detective finishing the case. The
investigative techniques taught in this class apply to Patrol Officers, Detectives, SRO’s,
